Welcome back to our regular Success With Soul Podcast series! This week I’m sharing a powerhouse conversation with some of the most alive, wise, and capable women in business that I know: Tarzan Kay, Jordan Gill, Lattice Hudson, and Ashley Gartland. In this conversation, we get to the heart of what it is to build a business that truly works for you. These women are breaking the mold by designing one-of-a-kind hybrid offers that deeply serve their clients, their joy, their health, and their lifestyles — and their creativity opens up worlds of possibilities for all of us.
There are a few things I never get tired of talking about, and intentionally creating your business to serve your life is definitely one of them! When we understand that there is more than one way to build a business, and we can see how it can be done — that’s an immediate invitation to freedom in our work.
It’s so powerful to realize we get to choose.
I can’t think of a better group of women entrepreneurs to take on this exciting topic of designing one-of-a-kind hybrid offers for your online business. These ladies are bold, inventive, flexible, and they are walking the talk.
I know that this conversation is vital for women entrepreneurs to hear. And I believe that when we hear other women telling their stories and supporting one another genuinely, we begin to see and feel what’s possible for us.
So, a few quick intros:
Tarzan Kay is an email copywriting expert who teaches how to sell big with truth-infused, story-based emails.
Jordan Gill is a VIP-day expert. She’s the operations consultant and founder of Systems Save Me, and she helps overworked, one-woman shows to become streamlined solopreneurs.
Lattice Hudson is a business coach who helps you become a wildly profitable online coach while building a life and business you love.
And Ashley Gartland, host of the Better Than Big podcast, is also a business coach who helps overwhelmed small businesses run their business in less time without sacrificing growth.
So let’s start with why we need to shift our perspective on how we choose and develop our offers.
Many of us are taught pretty narrow ideas about how to build a business and be a “successful” entrepreneur. Or rather, it’s common for the coach we hire or course we take to have a really specific idea about how to do this.
So you get people in camps, like:
It’s confusing and overwhelming, and we feel like we have to choose. PLUS, there’s a mindset that accompanies these pick-a-camp approaches. It basically says:
At the heart of what’s unreasonable and unsustainable about these approaches is that they don’t take into account any of what it is to be … well, human.
Sometimes we have a ton of clarity before we try something, and other times we don’t. Sometimes the thing we thought we’d love turns out not to be a great fit for our needs after all, for reasons we couldn’t have foreseen on the front end.
And especially as women, our lives are much less static. We go through many different seasons that require different things from us — mentally, emotionally, and physically. The things you need when you’re 22 and single are really different from what you need at 30 or 50, or when you have one or more kids, or if you have unexpected health challenges.
We NEED business models that favor flexibility, creativity, and a fine attunement to what feels aligned and alive in us in these changing seasons. In addition, we need wise mentors who can model this basic truth: when it comes to how to build a business, the possibilities are endless. And that’s great news.
You’ll hear a few themes that run through this conversation with Ashley, Tarzan, Lattice, and Jordan:
What we mean here is being willing to see the possibilities outside of the camps. It’s not either/or. It can definitely be both/and. Or a bit of this and a bit of that. Just because someone says courses and coaching can’t go together doesn’t mean that that’s actually true. You get to build a business the way you want to.
You might hate live launching. Or love it. Or like it sometimes … but only with particular products or at a particular time of year. You might love coaching … but only in certain circumstances or with certain boundaries. Well, what are those circumstances and boundaries? Create an offer that includes those.
Look at your strengths, your curiosities, and where you feel drawn. Play with combinations or even blendings that feel good to you. Assume that there’s room for what you like, what you’re good at, what makes money, and what gives you the time you need to live your life.
And as Lattice says, hybrid doesn’t just mean combining two things. You can mix and match, slice and dice, make something completely new. You could have coaching and a course — or a course with some coaching and some community, or however you want to do it. It really just depends on where you want your emphasis.
This is why I always say: Anything can work. You just have to find what works for you.
This was Tarzan’s wisdom, and everyone agreed. We’ve got to take a more nimble approach to how we choose and move around in our offers. That means trying things out, testing, tweaking, and trying again. It might mean letting go of something that we know is not working for us … even if we’ve put a lot of time and resources into it.
Also, it requires that we pay attention to our desires and our energy levels in different seasons of life. If you were totally jazzed about 1:1 coaching two years ago, but now you’re waking up and feeling totally exhausted by it — pay attention to that! You don’t have to keep doing it just because you liked it two years ago.
In addition to all of this is the reality that life often throws things at us we weren’t expecting. That means we have to be able to flex. If your kids are super little, you’re going to need something different than if they’re older. Or, if you’re like me or Jordan, you might have a chronic health condition that means you can’t work a full 8 hours a day, let alone 16. What does your life need?
Design your offerings around what allows you to maximize your health, your time, and your overall wellbeing.
This involves a couple of different things. First, just because something doesn’t work doesn’t mean we’ve failed. It doesn’t mean nobody wants what we have to give the world. And it doesn’t mean we’re bad entrepreneurs!
It might mean it’s not the right time. Another possibility is that the offering actually isn’t a good fit for us, and that mismatch is coming across to our audience. In addition, it could also just be something technical that can be fixed with some slight tweaking to our messaging.
Second, it’s really important that we not take ourselves quite so seriously. I say this as someone who struggles with this a decent amount. It’s good and healthy to reintroduce a sense of play into all of this.
Yes, there are things at stake. And it can feel like a lot is riding on this one launch or this one course. However, we’re actually more likely to see with clarity what the best path is if we can approach it with some levity and trust that it will work out. As Tarzan said: “There were launches where I made lots of money, and there were launches where I learned a lot.”

Your lifestyle includes tons of other things, too, like: how many hours you want to work a week; what your strengths and personality traits draw you to (for example, lots of 1:1 work, or more hands-off offerings); whether you like live launching or not; how much time off you want each year; working when your energy is highest; and how much flexibility you want to make room for things like exercise and being with kids. So when you build a business to fit your lifestyle, what that means is that you recognize that your biz is there to serve and support you and your whole life, not the other way around.

Welcome, welcome. I am so excited that you are here for one of the premier trainings for online entrepreneurs. Whether you are an aspiring entrepreneur, and aspiring blogger, or you've been doing this for decades, and you've got it all figured out, I think you'll still get a lot out of this training no matter where you fall on that spectrum. Before we do that, I just want to take a quick minute to introduce myself. So Hi, I'm Kate Kordsmeier. I am the founder and CEO of the Success with Soul Incubator. I have had an online business since 2015. And I've made over $1.4 million from my blog courses and coaching programs. But also in that time, I've had two babies and taken six months of paid maternity leave, which if you're self employed doesn't usually exist. I've also dealt with chronic health conditions like hypothyroidism and PCOS. And I'll be really honest here, crippling anxiety and panic attacks. That being said, My business has also allowed me to take so many weeks of vacation, I've created incredible friendships and memories and have experienced more joy, freedom and fulfillment than I ever thought possible. So I want to explain this too, because I just want to be super clear about what it is that we do and what you can expect from this training and beyond. So let me be clear, this is not an overnight success story with a six figure launch on my first try. Nor do we help our clients create momentary success like that either. We are in this for the long haul, creating a business that can stand the test of time leaving a legacy and creating a future. Our kickoff session is six systems for six figure CEOs. Now you may not be thinking of yourself as a CEO just yet. You may have been a CEO for many years and like I said before, both are totally okay. This is going to be all about like the foundations of creating a really, I say six figure. But I also mean a really soulful and sustainable business. And so these are the foundations. This is like the 30,000 foot view. So there's six things that I feel like create this, and we're gonna get started with number one. So the first one is vision, all six figure CEOs need a vision. Now, this maybe sounds a little bit obvious, but I want to talk about it from a couple of different perspectives that aren't often shared. So the first is, as Yogi Berra says, If you don't know where you're going, you might wind up someplace else. And you also won't know when you get there, and you won't know what to prioritize, and what's important and what's moving the needle and what's working and what's not. Because you don't have a vision, you don't have that goal in mind, you don't have the end in sight, or at least the next step on your journey. So it is really important to think about some of the basics. And these are some of the questions that I have here, take a screenshot of this slide if you want to journal on some of these things later. But think about things like who are you really like? Who are you? What is your personality type? What are your values? Like? What's important to you? How would people describe you? How would you describe yourself? Who are you? Then think about what is your purpose or cause or passion? And then from there, you can start to figure out now how did this apply to your business? What does your business offer? Who do you serve? What is your commitment to them? And why do you do what you want to do there what you do. So the why part is one of the aspects that I feel like isn't talked about as much as it should be. And the reason I say that is because it's really easy to focus, we live in a very finite, tangible world where we have like the what goals, right, we want to create six figures, we want to have 20 clients, whatever those kinds of goals, those kinds of results. That's what gets the focus. But there's two other pieces of vision that I feel like, are often not talked about, and one of them is the wife. So this is what you need, when things get tough. And trust me, if you are an entrepreneur, things will get tough. So ask yourself, again, take a screenshot of this slide if you want, there's lots of good journaling opportunities coming up. So ask yourself, what is the point of all of this? And this is what I call the circle of why. And what I mean by that is that you continue asking yourself why after every question, and every time you come up with an answer, ask yourself why again, and see what is beneath that. And that is where you can really like boil down to what is the point of all of this, you don't want to wake up one day and at the end of the journey be like, Why was I even doing this? Like maybe you've even had crazy success, and you have made millions of dollars and you have, you know, the most successful business in the world. But what was the point? And again, this comes back to your vision and meeting that why so is the point to make a certain amount of money? Why is that important to you? And that's totally okay, if that's your vision, there is a lot of things that having wealth in this country and in the world can do for you and can do for the world. So it's okay, if the answer is about money. But it may be that you want to ask yourself something deeper than that? Is it to have a certain type of lifestyle? Why is that important to you? Is it to make a certain kind of impact? Why is that important to you? So again, continue going down this kind of like circle of y. And every time you come up with an answer, ask yourself why again, and see what is beneath that, in my experience, you need a y that is bigger than you and bigger than $1 amount. And that's because this is hard. And so when things get tough, and if you're just doing it for the money, it's going to be way too easy to burn out or give up or just quit. So really getting clear on your why. Now the other piece that I feel like is even less talked about than the why. And this is one of the most important pieces of vision is the how, how does it actually feel? So how does it feel to have 20 clients? How does it feel to have 500 students in your course? How does it feel to run a business that has 10 employees? Is it in alignment with your values? are you sacrificing something important to get there? And so I feel like this is one of those like just undervalued pieces that nobody is really talking about. And here's a good example of how this really comes up for me. When I'm thinking about the how, and this is this iceberg, right? We've seen this you see just the tip and especially with social media, it's really easy to see just that what looks like a moment of seemingly spontaneous success. But of course There was so much that went into that, that we didn't see. And we don't see what it takes to get there. And sometimes what it takes to reach someone else's success isn't worth it to us. It doesn't mean it's not a worthy pursuit, maybe it is worth it to them. But we each have our own needs, goals, desires, obligations, so you need to figure out what is it worth to you. So for example, I'm not willing to sacrifice my health and well being for seven figures or for any dollar amount, right? I'm not willing to sacrifice time with my friends and family for pretty much anything. And I'm not willing to work 60 hours a week or live lunch all the time, or pretend to be somebody that I'm not. So what are you not willing to sacrifice? Write it down. This is a super powerful boundary exercise. And I think this also kind of comes back to again, nobody's really talking about the how, and this is because like, what other gurus are preaching is their own goal, their own business their own way, right, there's one right way to do things is what the message that we receive over and over again, but your goal doesn't need to be the same as everyone else's. And there is no such thing as one size fits all strategies. And more importantly, there are so many ways to get to the same result. So even if you might have the same goal, or you're looking for the same result, there are a million ways to eat an ice cream cone. So should you do an online course maybe you should do a membership, maybe you should stick with one on one, no group coaching seems better. Maybe you should have an agency, maybe you should do VIP days, there's a million different business models out there, even just in this niche industry of online business. But there is no one right answer. And this is what is at the heart of this conference, there are an infinite number of possibilities for your business model. And even better, what you decide today does not have to be what you do forever. So one of the best parts of online business is the ease of pivoting, you are allowed to change your mind, you are allowed to try something and if it doesn't work to try something else and tweak it or evolve, you are allowed to do things your way, despite what Facebook ads tell you. I don't know about you. But every time I'm on Facebook, I get an ad from somebody that's just like, super bro marketing masculine, like this is the way I do it my way. And they're usually like talking to you from a private jet, it's gross, right? You are allowed to design your business to fit your life, not the other way around. And the other thing I want to give you permission to do is you are allowed to fail. In fact, please get busy failing, because it is the only path to success. That is literally the only common denominator in the sea of strategies out there. And the way to you know the way to success, the only common denominator is that you're gonna have to fail before you get there. So you're gonna have to get busy failing and figuring shit out in order to find what works for you. So, again, this graphic, I feel like really paints the picture because I know so many of us often get stuck comparing our beginnings or middles to someone else, who is years ahead of us. And when we're looking at what these people have achieved what we want, we think that's what we want, especially through those, again, rose colored glasses of curated Instagram feeds, it can all look so effortless and overnight. But what we don't see is everything else that it took. And I promise you that nothing is as easy and effortless as it might look on the outside. So to sum this all up, I think it's really important to think about what does success mean to you. And defining this is how you create a truly soul led business. So I found this, quote years ago, and I always come back to at whenever I'm getting kind of lost in my own like, what am I doing this for? What is my vision again, what is the point of all of this, so to laugh often and much to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty to find the best and others to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition. To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived this is to have succeeded. And I just get like chills even just reading this again. It's so good. And it just reminds me like notice not anywhere in there does it say to make a million dollars? Nowhere does it say to have 30,000 Instagram followers and this may not be success for you. Obviously the whole point is that you need to define what success means to you. But to me, this is such a good reminder that it's not about the what it's about the how and so again, a great opportunity just screenshot this slide. These are some great things to join On How do I want to spend my time working? And otherwise? How do I give back to my community? And those less fortunate? Do I feel loved cared for and held? Do I feel seen heard and understood? Do I feel connection and belonging and value? How do I want to feel about my work? What does my ideal work day or work week actually look and feel like? And then if you want to even think about your financial goals, because it's not that those aren't important, it's just like they're over indexed? How do those financial goals actually make you feel? How does this number compared to how much you truly need or want? And what would be enough for you? I think we live in a culture that is so like, grow, grow, grow, grow, grow, you must be constantly growing? Why? What if there was such a thing as enough? So how often do you experience true joy? That's the other thing because you might be growing and having all this success, but are you happy. And I feel like you need to come back to that and make sure that you're building this into your vision from day one. So all of these combined the What the Who the why the how these create your grand vision. And like I said, it takes a lot of journaling to get truly clear. You can drag and drop like your own photos and inspiration images and things you find online into some of the earlier slides where it's more visual, and it's more pictures, and then go through and answer those questions in each area of your life. This is a Jack Canfield inspired exercise for anyone who knows, like the Chicken Soup for the Soul stuff. So this you'll see this page here, this is like drag and drop your images into those spots, right? But then there's questions to answer about every aspect of your life. Because we're not just trying to build a successful business, we're trying to build a life that you truly love. And that means so much more than just what's happening at work. So go and download this, I would love we have the Facebook group, if you want to post there and share some of your vision board. Maybe it's just the image that you feel comfortable sharing, maybe it's the whole thing. But I think being in community with other people who are doing this with you and can support you and cheer you on and maybe even hold you accountable. At the end, there's that little activity that you can do to actually bring your vision to life. But please share it whether in the Facebook group or on social, I would love to see what your vision looks like. And this is one of those like really simple exercises, but And it reminds me of being like 13 and cutting out pictures from magazines and like celebrity heads and putting them on poster board and stuff. And this is like the modern day version of that for adults. But I hope that you will enjoy this and it is yeah, Carrie from Team KK is the vision board queen, and she is convinced that anything she puts on her vision board comes true. So if that's not enough of a reason to do it. All right, so let's move on. So the second thing that you need the second system or foundation is courage. If you want to have a profitable business, you have got to get past impostor syndrome, you must know your own value and worth, regardless of what anyone else thinks or how much money you make, or how many followers you have. And this is especially difficult for women because we've been living under systems of oppression like patriarchy and white supremacy if you're a woman of color. So we must learn how to signal safety to our bodies. So I want everybody to take a minute, close your eyes. Get comfortable for a second, but get your feet on the ground get centered. And I want to just do a quick activity to just get ourselves out of that impostor syndrome and into knowing our worth. So repeat after me either silently if you're embarrassed to do it out loud or say it out loud. But really feel this and believe it okay? I am safe. I have value. I am inherently worthy. living my dream is my birthright. The world is better with me in it. Others need to hear what I have to say. I have something to give. Take a deep breath and
release all of those feelings of unworthiness and impostor syndrome and not good enough. Come back to this exercise. Say it, believe it. It is the truth. Okay, open your eyes come back to me. All right. So I want to tell you a story. And if y'all are on the wholesale list, you might have seen this this week, but my mom actually sent me this email recently and I can't stop thinking about it. It just was so good. And I don't know who the credit for the story goes to. It's, you know, one of those email forwards one of the few that my mom has sent that I'm like, Oh, that was actually worth reading. But this one is a father to his daughter upon her graduation says, Okay, you finally graduated and you did it with honors, I'm very proud and as a gift, here is a Jeep that I acquired many years ago. It has a lot of history. Before I give this to you, I want you to take it to the used car lot downtown, tell them I want to sell it and see how much they offer you. So the daughter goes to the used car lot returned and said they offered me $3,000 Because the Jeep is very dated. Okay, take it to the pawn shop. daughter goes to the pawn shop returns and says they offered me $1,200 Because it's a very old Jeep, the father said, then says, All right, go to the Jeep club, show them the jeep and see if he would consider selling it. The daughter takes the Jeep to the club returns and says, The man there offered me $50,000 for it. Since it's a factory original Golden Eagle CJ, an iconic Jeep and sought after by many. And the father said to his daughter, I want you to always know that the right place values you the right way. If you feel you are not valued, it simply means you are in the wrong place. Again, I keep getting my like I have goosebumps saying this out loud. I don't know if this is resonating with y'all at all. But it just like really reminded me that there is a place for everybody. And if you're not feeling valued, if you're not finding what you want there, it just means you're in the wrong place. Just go to a new place, try something new. So those who know your value or those who appreciate you never stay in a place where you are unappreciated. All right. Now part of getting rid of and past impostor syndrome is letting go of perfectionism. So let's play a game. This is something that I love to do whenever I am afraid to take the next step. And it starts with say, Okay, what is the worst case scenario? And so let's just pick something like, I want to launch an online course. And so if I say, Okay, let's say I do this, what is the worst case scenario if I launch an online course? And generally, when I actually think about it, and I am realistic, it's like, all right. I might try it, I might launch it. Maybe nobody buys. Okay? How hard would it actually be to fix or change or improve that later? Okay, I launched nobody bought? Can I try a different launch method? Can I try a different marketing tactic? Am I in the wrong room? Am I speaking to the wrong people? Is there something I could tweak? How hard would it actually be to do those things? And then let's even go further in the worst case scenario, okay. It's just not going to work ever. Nothing about this is right. It was a total waste of time. Was it? Was it really a waste of time? Because I think we can all agree that even though we don't want to maybe relive some of our darker times, or think times when things didn't work out, or we had heartbreak or loss or grief of some kind, they usually taught us something. There's pretty much always a lesson in there. And as Carrie likes to say, things are happening for you. And can you see it that way? Now, the other side of this game is, well, what would be the best case scenario? So let's say I launched this course, and what's the best case scenario, it's like, oh, my gosh, I sell 1000 of them, I become a multimillionaire and I create a beautiful business making a gigantic impact on the world and you know, living out my vision. Now, which one is more realistic? And which one feels like you want to lean into that? Because I think you can either operate out of fear, or out of faith. And I always come back to like, which one is it for me? Do I want to live my life based in fear? Or faith? What could you accomplish? If you took the time you spent trying to either make it perfect? or convince yourself why it's a bad idea, all that effort and energy what if you could take that time and just put it towards getting it done? So I know at least the saying in the chat number one struggle is perfectionism. It is so common and it I see it all the time and six FBA to with people who don't want to launch their blogs. You can't see me I'm saying that in air quotes because they're afraid and what if what what somebody's gonna think something about you, okay, people are gonna think something about you whether you do it or not. I always come back to like, Would I rather be judged for going for it and taking risks and going after my dreams? or would I rather be judged for sitting on the sidelines my whole life and never doing what I really wanted to do? So people They're gonna judge you no matter what. Just think what you really want what is the best case scenario and operate from that place of faith? The second piece of that I want to share is imagine for a moment what it would be like to take action and have it be 50%. Perfect. This is not even very good, right? 50% Perfect is like oh, no, but you're actually helping your ideal client get the results, you know, you can help them with. And now imagine what it would be like to never take the action at all and be in the same place for years to come. So this is what I did with the Incubator. I launched it before it really existed. I delivered the content live, I actually still am delivering some of the content live. And yet, look at the impact that I made on someone else's life having it be like 10% perfect when I put it out into the world. Caroline texted me this the other day, she said, Thank you seriously, your program has changed my life. And so quickly, too. I was telling Chaz last night, this is her husband, I don't think I'll ever forget the first time you said your podcast. And it was the first time I had really considered that it could happen. And soon, hiring, deciding the next trajectory for my business, just hashtag all the things. And it's funny because it's not even like this one lesson changed at all. It's just the access to your contacts and showing up every week, no matter what it's like, I'm in a rocket ship. And I really needed to hear this message when she sent it to me. But it was just such a good reminder, that was like if I had waited to launch this program until everything was created, and everything was done and everything was perfect, I would not have received this I would not have made this impact on somebody else's life. And it just made. It was like just the best reminder to me of like, just get started because even just the tiniest step can make a huge impact. Okay, final word of caution about imposter syndrome. I hesitate to ever use the phrase like get rid of imposter syndrome, because impostor syndrome never goes away, no matter what you've achieved. Every single person deals with this at different phases in different ways along their own journey. It's never going to go away. But what you can do is decide whether or not you're going to let it control you. And I was watching the show on HBO the other day, it is hilarious. So I highly recommend it. It's called the other two. And there's this one of the characters in there is like 30 year old guy. And he's been trying to make it as an actor. And he's, you know, just feels like he's really struggling. And he went from being a waiter. And he was just trying to get like, auditions for one of his auditions was to guy who smells fart at a party. And so it was ridiculous, right? But that's what he starts at. And then he starts with becoming a host for all of these like EA shows where he's just doing these sort of like celebrity news gossipy stuff, right. And then he starts getting stuff for movies, but then the movie gets pulled. And anyway, he has a giant meltdown to his friend. And his friend says, you're so used to struggling and so used to being shit on or feeling like you're not doing well enough that you don't realize when you actually do start to make progress. You don't see how other people are looking at you. Last year, if you were doing then what you're doing today, you would have thought you hit the jackpot. But now you've achieved it. And so you've moved the goalpost. Stop moving the goalposts. And I was like, Wendell, for such a ridiculous show. That was such a like, great lesson for me, because I do this all the time. Like when I first started, I would be like, if I could just make $5,000 a month, I would be the most successful woman that ever lived. And then you make 5000. And then you move the goalposts. And now when I have a $45,000 month, I feel like a failure. But it's because I've moved the goalposts. So I think this ties into imposter syndrome and that we're always moving the goalposts changing what success means. And so again, coming back to that vision, what does actual success really look like to you? What does it really mean to you? Now, one other tip, this is a great comparison hack. It'll like stop that comparison in its tracks. Pick one of your favorite mentors. So for me one time I did this with Amy Porterfield and scroll all the way back to their first posts. I actually was on watching a YouTube video of hers. This was several years ago now. And I clicked like all videos and then sorted by date and it gave me her very first video. And it was like when you know, Amy Porterfield wasn't always Amy Porterfield like she started just like us messy, unsure, just trying it just doing it. It wasn't perfect. And it was so powerful to me to see how she's grown. And I've since done this with other people how they have grown since then, and it just reminds us everybody starts somewhere, but you got to start. So just take the next step and have said this many times before. So if you've been following along, you'll know action stops fear. So I'm gonna start here, y'all know that transparency is a huge value of mine. So I will always keep it real, tell it like it is and share. I'm an open book, I will share anything and everything with you all. This is my income since I started my business 2016. I technically started November 2015. But that was basically the end of the year. And I tell you, I made $0. So 2016 was my first full year in business. And this is what's happened over the last six years. So in that first year, I only made $6,000. And it was like, at the end of that year, I definitely had to come back to that vision and that why and go. Are you sure about this? I don't feel like this is really working. And you can't pay your bills with this, like, what are you doing here, but I doubled down I committed and in the next year, I made almost $75,000 Then I doubled that the third year, I made 143,000. And it's gone up from there between 2019 and 2020, we doubled again. And now this year, we've got a couple months left, but we're on track for 600,000. So what I want to show here is again, this was not an overnight success. I didn't go from 6000 to 600,000. In a couple of months, I didn't even do it in a couple of years, it has been very slow and sustainable. And there is so much benefit to this kind of growth. And I want to talk about some of those benefits. So the first that I want you to see here as this pink line. It's not one of those straight lines that just going like in a perfect diagonal, right? There is like an exponential curve that happens. There is a snowball effect that happens and that around that one year to two year mark, when things are feeling like her it's not working. When you keep going and you show up committed and dedicated to achieving that vision that you set, a snowball effect happens. And you can see that when that snowball gets going, it really can get going. And I'm so excited to see what could come five years from today. There's so much potential, but I know that I don't I don't need to go from 600,000 to 5 million tomorrow or next year. Right? I want this slow sustainable growth. Why? Because slow is smooth and smooth is fast. I've got all kinds of other expressions like this for you more haste less speed. You've got to crawl before you walk. Have you eaten an elephant you eat an elephant one bite at a time. And my favorite Nature never rushes but everything always gets done. So Oh, again, there's this compound effect. And I think of it like gardening. Every year we had a couple of years ago, we decided to hire a fancy landscaping company to come and redo all of our flower beds in our front yard. And I was so excited. And at the time, I mean, it was several $1,000, I was like, this is ridiculously expensive, I can't believe we're doing this. But I'm going to come home. And this is going to be like the most lush Oasis I've ever seen. And I came back, and they planted all these baby plants that were like six inches tall. And I was so disappointed because I was like, oh my god, I thought this was going to be like this really lush garden. And it's all of these just like baby plants. But then what happened, we took care of them. And then the following year, they came back and they were twice their size. And we did the same thing. We kept nurturing them and being patient and giving them the TLC they needed. And the next year, they came back and they had grown again. And that is exactly what your business needs to is just that like slow and steady nurture and patience, and it will come back bigger and better each time. But if you try to rush it, if I tried to do like over fertilize the plants to make them bigger, I would have killed them, you have to be patient is really what it comes down to. And I say this as much to myself, as I say to every one of y'all because patience is definitely not my strong suit. But when I can slow down and look at the data I've been trying to do this more lately is like stop making emotionally based decisions, look at the data and make evidence based decisions. What does looking at this chart over the last six years Tell me? And how can I take the next step looking at this data? And when I thought of this gardening analogy, I was like, yes, that's exactly it. Why am I expecting or even wanting it to grow too quickly? So what does this look like? One example of what this looks like, is the difference between live launching versus using evergreen funnels. Now if y'all have been following me a while, you know, I'm all about the Evergreen funnel. And in fact, this conference was a very big lesson for me and why I do evergreen, because live launching is very stressful. And I should have known better in some ways, because I've lived launched before, and it took a lot out of me. And even when I've had really successful live launches, for example, this is a chart that's looking at two different 10 month periods, but over a similar amount of time. And the green bars are when I was doing a live launch model. So I first launched my course and I made like 20 grand, something like that. And I mean, I thought that was huge. It was amazing. I was like oh my gosh, this was proof of concept validated. So exciting. But then what happened, I didn't make any money, like literally $0 Until I launched again. And when I launched again, it was a little bit less actually, because I didn't have any strategy going into it. I was just like, alright, well, we'll just launch again. And then again, took a couple months, no money launched again, in this launch. Now this is all gross revenue. I actually lost money on this launch, because I spent a crazy amount on Facebook ads, and they didn't work. So I lost money. And going into the next launch. It was like, Oh my gosh, this has to work. So I gave it my all I put everything I had into it. And it did work. We ended up having a six figure launch. Again, not overnight, not on my first try. But I did get to a six figure launch. But what came after was like, Oh my God, I need to take three months off now because I am so burned out and tired and exhausted and spent. And just like I can't do this and the thought of having to live launch again. After that was like no, I need a new business model. I can't do this. Well, it worked out for me because I happened to be seven months pregnant at that six figure launch. And so I knew that I couldn't live launch again too soon, because I was about to have a baby. And then I was going to be on maternity leave. And I had no interest or even capacity to live launch with like a three week old. So I decided to try an evergreen funnel. So this is where we started. And the first month we turned the Evergreen funnel on we made like 10 or $15,000. And I didn't do anything I just turned it on. And from there, it's continued to go up and we've had some ups and downs, right? There's been a pandemic, I took another maternity leave like there's been a disruptive election season and a social justice uprising and things have changed a lot. But what you can see here is that this is really kind of like slow and steady growth. And there are some downtimes but you're not going down to zero. And it's pretty easy to bring it back up without that same amount of effort and pushing and forcing. So this gives me so much more consistent year round revenue versus that feast or famine launch cycle. Now a lot of people will say Yeah, but you can't make as much money when you are evergreen as you can when you live launch. And I think that's BS. And in this example, what I have here is during that same 10 month period, this is how much money we made live launching, about $140,000, I think. And then in that next 10 month period, this is how much money we made with an evergreen funnel, it was more like 320. So the same amount of time. And we're able to make double what we made why of launching with an evergreen funnel. And guess what I was doing that during that time that this evergreen funnel was running, nothing, like hanging out first, I was literally on maternity leave not working at all. And we made $135,000 on my maternity leave. And then the second thing was, yeah, I came back and I was working, but I wasn't working on that I was able to spend time in my business like hiring and systematizing and building more of a solid foundation and thinking about where do I want to go next, because I wasn't so caught in this feast or famine launch cycle, which creates such this like desperate energy around everything you do. And that's just never going to work for anybody.
So this is what you want sustainable, consistent growth. And now I want you to remember this because it ties into number four, which is coming up. One of the things I want you to notice about this kind of sustainable growth is that success isn't a straight line from A to Z. When you look at these charts, it's not, you know, it doesn't go like this, right? There's some dips, there's some plateaus, but those plateaus can actually be really beautiful. Because since they're not zero, you're not totally panicked, trying to figure out how you're going to pay your bills, or figuring out how are you ever going to have the capacity to live launch again, those plateaus, you actually get to again, streamline? systematize strategize, and I don't know how about rest, play, enjoy your life. It's a ladder, your stair stepping your way up and kind of plateauing along the way. So another way to think of this is this is a graphic or a meme, or whatever I've seen several times, this is what people think success looks like. And this is what success actually looks like. It is a freakin mess, right? There is no straight linear line to point A to point Z. And there we go. Success is not linear, it ebbs and flows. And actually, what I've found is that it's cyclical. So just as nature is cyclical, just as women's bodies are cyclical, the seasons are cyclical, like so is success. And we're going to go through different phases where we're in periods of like, okay, it's really kind of a good time to just sort of hibernate and rest and recover. And I just need to kind of go into that void. And then we're also going to come into times where it's like, it's summer, I'm in full bloom, I want to be out and about, I'm networking, I've got a million ideas. And we're gonna go through that again, and again and again, for eternity. And I feel like when we accept that we can stop being so hard on ourselves, when it's like, oh, gosh, I'm really tired. I am so lazy, I'm so useless. No, you're just in that phase, you will come out of it, a new phase will begin. Plants don't bloom 100% of the year, you know, they they go dormant for a while they come back. And what I like to do when I think about these kinds of the cyclical model, is think about something that I learned from Bjork, oh, strim, from the food blogger pro podcast, and he says he has this concept called 1% infinity. And it's basically that if every day you just try to be 1%, better than you were the day before. Eventually, you'll be great. I think it's again, sort of that idea that we get too overwhelmed thinking about the huge big picture, I have to go from zero to 60. And that's like, the only way there and it's like, No, you go from zero to one, and then you go from one to two, and then you you know, from there on in there. So 1% and better 1% Better for infinity, every day going around this cycle again, and again. And again, just like life is so cyclical. Alright, so this is kind of a silly analogy, but I'm excited to share it with you because I was a food writer and a former life. And I'm going to illustrate this point with a delicious metaphor. So think of the difference between slow growth and fast growth, like the difference between braised slow cooked meat versus something done with a quick char on the grill. So what do you notice about that rare steak? What I noticed is the steak is not done in the middle. It didn't have enough time. It's hard on the outside. And while delicious, I'm all about a rare steak. Yes, Mary Ellen got it. Awesome. Mary Ellen, this holistic piece of meat is uneven, just like growing beyond your means too quickly and burning out that it's the same kind of idea and wasn't It really stressful to get that steak so perfect where you have that perfect crispy char on the outside, but it's super rare and you know, juicy on the inside, like how much work went into getting that result, standing by the grill and making sure you take it off at the perfect time and flip it at just the right time it gets so much effort versus throwing a pork shoulder in the in the crock pot. Sure it took more time to get that juicy, tender, slow cooked end result. But wasn't it less stressful than having to like maniacally watch the grill to make sure everything happens at just the right time. So I don't know if that resonated with y'all when I was thinking about how can I illustrate this point of like slow growth actually being really positive when we live in a culture of immediate gratification. And that's just what came up for me. So okay, Molly's saying love it. So other benefits of slow growth, it's way less stressful, there's less risk, and you make less mistakes, because you have the space and the time to really think through what you're doing. Whereas if you grow way too fast, it's super stressful. Like I really can't tell you I have several people, there's one woman in particular comes to mind in my mastermind. And when she first launched her program, she sold 40 seats, she got 40 clients, what am I trying to say? And she made $400,000. And she was like, Oh, my God, this is amazing. And then I talked to her two weeks later, and she was like, I'm drowning, I think I'm going to die. I was not prepared for this. I don't have the systems in place. I don't have the team in place. I can't do this all myself. Now I have 40 people who paid me 10 grand apiece who are wanting a lot of things from me, rightfully so. And I can't deliver it to them. And it was such a I mean, of course, I felt terrible for her that she was having to experience that. But it was a good reminder to me of like, oh, right, growing too quickly, isn't always better. And the other benefit to have slow growth is that the quality goes up. Because when you're doing things slowly, again, you can take your time with it, you can really make sure that that things are up to your level of quality and snuff and you have more focus, you have more intentionality because you're you know, you're taking the time to actually vision and figuring out, where do I want to go, you're not just ending up somewhere and then being like, I didn't sign up for this, this is not what I wanted, you get more clarity. And again, coming back to some of those more tangible things. There's a steadier cash flow. And that is way less stressful on our central nervous systems to just have steady and sustainable. Alright, number four is passive lead diversity. Now we're going to talk about this more during the VIP bonus day tomorrow. So please do make sure that you've applied because we're going to dive into all of the details of what this actually means. But I want to talk about sort of the general idea here, because I do believe that it's so it's so important to lead with passive income streams, it doesn't mean that you don't have anything that isn't passive. But if you are a passive lead diversity, I feel like that is so much more sustainable. And the other piece of it, there's really two pieces because there's the passive component, but then there's also the diversity component. And by that, I mean, don't put all your eggs in any one basket, I would never recommend you rely on one traffic source only, or that you make sales only one way, or that you have only one revenue stream. Because as we have seen things change all the time very fast, you have very little control. And we're at the mercy of a lot of these big tech firms like Facebook, right, so having multiple eggs in different baskets, so that you can have that diversity. And if something changes in one place, you're not totally screwed, is super important. So I like to think of this as the difference between having like driving a Prius and driving a like super fast car that takes I don't know what I know nothing about cars, somebody helped me here, I'm like something that takes really nasty for the environment, gas and but it'll get you there really fast, right? So in these three areas where I like to see the most diversity in businesses, the first one is traffic. And so the hybrid the sustainable way, it's a little bit slower, but it's gonna get you there and it's gonna get you there and a more sustainable, effortless way that just feels better and is better for everybody around you as well, is organic traffic or blogging and SEO. So y'all know me from Route unravel, a lot of you do at least so blogging and SEO is the best way to get organic traffic to your site. I also really like referral traffic, which is like you have relationships with other friends, colleagues, peers, and they refer business to you. I know for example, Molly gets a lot of business from referrals. And that's such a passive way to do business because you're not having to be out there selling all the time. You can actually just let other people do that for you. Now compare this to more of those Quick gas lead traffic strategies. This is like paid ads. This is like social media. And the thing about using these type of methods, it's the same thing with a car. If you put gas in a car, it'll get you where you need to go. As soon as you stop putting gas in that car, the car doesn't run. So if you stop spending money on paid ads, you stop getting leads, you stop getting traffic, whereas organic blogging and SEO, if you stop for a little bit, it can still keep going. Because it doesn't need that constant attention and input in order to operate. So not saying that you can do it once and then walk away for like 10 years and never touch it again. But you have a much more sustainable period, or like a longer shelf life. In terms of sales, the hybrid way would be evergreen funnels, which we talked about versus something like live launching. And then in terms of revenue, I like to lead with selling my own stuff. And then affiliate marketing, it's super passive. And it's such a great way to add diversity to your revenue streams. Now, this is compared to something like working with sponsors, where when you work with a sponsor, you're only getting paid when you do a sponsored post. And then it's the same thing with gas. As soon as you stop doing sponsored posts, you stop making money, versus if you have an affiliate post, that post can still earn money for years to come without you doing anything to it. So I like thinking of it hybrid versus gasoline, Melissa saying this is a great way to frame this. So I'm glad that's resonating for y'all too. Number five is serve first strategy. So this is something that I feel like is really important when you are running your business and you want to do it from a soulful place, I think you need to meet your customers where they're at, and put the focus of your strategy on serving them on delivering value on helping them and not so much on the sales. So I have a little diagram here that I want to walk through, which is basically the attract, nurture convert model. This is nothing new. I did not invent this, obviously. But I think that what I've put in each of the categories of how to attract how to nurture how to convert is what makes the strategy a little bit different. And again, it's coming from a place of service. So let's start with the Attract phase free content. So to me, that is free content, blogging, podcasting, YouTube videos, I mean, technically, it's social media. But of course, hybrid versus gasoline, I'm not going there. So it's free content that's going to attract people into your audience, they're going to be able to find you because they're searching for something on Google, or in their podcast player or on YouTube or Pinterest. And they're going to come and find your content, and you're going to deliver them value. And then from there, you're going to nurture those people by getting them to opt in to your email list. So on that piece of free content, you're going to have an email opt in or a lead magnet of some type, that's going to get them onto your email list. And once they're on your email list, you're going to nurture them from there, part of the nurture phase. And what's cool about this is that the nurture and convert almost overlap with each other, because what you can do is you can nurture them by putting them through an evergreen funnel. And in that funnel, it's not just sell, sell, sell, sell, sell, it's, here's some value, here's a lesson, here's some perspective, here's something you could do to take action today. Here's some mindset advice. And now let's talk about what I you know, working together, you can add in emails before after the open cart or the sales portion where you're nurturing them. And then after they're out of the Evergreen funnel, then maybe you're sending them more like weekly newsletters. And again, it's all cyclical, so it's going to just keep going, because then that now that person is on your list, they went through your funnel, maybe they purchase, maybe they did it. And now you're gonna give them more free content to continue building that know like and trust factor. And then it's going to come back around, and you're going to email them more, and you're going to continue nurturing them. And then we have a very cool strategy. Again, you'll learn more about this tomorrow at the VIP bonus day, but for relaunching to people who didn't purchase using the Evergreen model, so it's all very automated and passive. And you're just going around this cycle again and again and again. And then of course, I have kind of over in the corner here that when needed. You can add in live urgency if you want to. So you can do webinar live, you could do a workshop or a conference or some kind of live component, an open house, something like that, when you are ready to create some kind of urgency or get that live energy. So you can add that in when needed. But it's not necessary to build your business. It's just sort of like an add on when you need a little gasoline. All right. The last one is support. All six figure CEOs need support. Because and I've hinted at this many times. This is hard This is really freaking hard. I'm not going to sugarcoat it for you all is that is not my style. So I think that you need perseverance and resilience, almost more than anything in order to make it in entrepreneurship. So often I see people usually like in Facebook groups, whether it's mine or somebody else's, and they're lamenting about how hard it is to set up the tech or how hard it is to stay consistent, or whatever it might be. And yes, this is hard. That's sometimes what I want to say is just like, Yep, this is really hard, stop expecting it to be easy. And then being surprised and angry when it's not, there is a reason the majority of people work for someone else. And there's also a reason the majority of millionaires are self employed. So just be ready for this to be hard and start building that perseverance muscle, because it is going to be hard and you are going to need support, because it is really hard, you also are going to need flexibility. And again, I just want to remind you, it is okay to change your mind, I think we put way too much pressure on what we decide today, meaning forever. So I'm going to launch a course on blogging, that means I forever have to have a course on blogging. And if I ever changed my mind, it's impossible. No, I can retire six FBI at anytime I want you I can shift or I could start a new program or I could do whatever I want, I am allowed to change my mind. Obviously, you need strategy. And that's a level of support where I feel like you need educational resources and coaching someone you can look to for guidance, someone who has done what you want to do has been where you want to go, who can answer your questions and support you and things get tough. But you also don't want just any strategy, right? Like you need strategies that were built for you as a woman. And that factor in how much support we have both at work and at home, how much mental bandwidth we all know is taken up with the emotional labor of maintaining a household and accompany and what does strategy and support look like for people like us, because I think that so much of the strategy that's out there is by men for men, and they have a very different lifestyle than we do. So I think finding somebody who can actually understand what your life might look like and feel like and what it's like to be in a woman's body. And all that kind of stuff is really important. Of course, I think you need a lot of self care. Because if you don't take care of yourself, you cannot take care of your business. And I want to get people thinking about how taking care of their business is also a form of self care. Because if you have been, for example, a stay at home mom who gives everything to everybody else, and you never make time for yourself, actually working on your business can be a form of self care. But the opposite can also be true where you can go too far to the other end of the spectrum, and you're working yourself to the bone. And that's not good either, right? So if you're suffering and struggling, your business is going to suffer and struggle. And the more you grow, the bigger you get, the more self care you need. So making sure that self care is part of your support. And then the last thing that you really need and support is peers and community. We can't do it all. We definitely can't do it all alone. I think we can have it all. But we can't do it all and we can't do it all ourselves. We need support. We need community we need sisterhood, we need people who get it who are in the trenches with us going through the same challenges and coming out the other side cheerleading us masterminding with us. You need that kind of support when you are running your own business because it can be very isolating as well. And having people that you can actually talk to like, you may not have a team when you first get started, right. You may not have co workers and sometimes Yeah, my husband is great. I mean, honestly, I don't he has more patients than I ever would to listen to my work stuff. But he doesn't get it. He's not in this business. He's not in this industry. He doesn't know what this is really like. So you need support, you need that community. And I just want to remind everybody that this is hard, but you can do hard things. So many of us are moms that is proof whenever I'm doing something really hard, I think about the fact that I had to unmedicated childbirth, and I'm like, I can do this, if I did that I can do this. Even if you're not a mom, we are women living under patriarchy, that itself is proof that we can do hard things. So remember, though, while this might be hard, it's also one of the lowest cost businesses to start with one of the largest profit margins. So you're in a really good place where it's like, yeah, you might have to spend a couple 100 Maybe a couple $1,000 What are their business can you start for that little and then immediately your profit is basically like 90 to 100% So remember that like it is hard, but there are things that are also really easy about this. All of it means come back to your Why come back to that Isn't that we started with it will also help you get through those hard things. Oh, good. Good. Okay, cool. So let's see, I see Melissa had we have like, 10. Melissa, is that registered for this? It was so funny to me looking at the lesson like, wow, there's a lot of Melissa. So this is Melissa T. She says, Do you recommend Live launching once, ie the first time? So yes, I do not recommend Live launching once first. And I have changed my tune on this. I used to think that maybe you needed to live launch once first. Because what a live launch can do is that you get a group of people all going through something at the same time. And so it helps you figure out where were the holes, where did things break down what worked and what didn't, because you have a big group going through at one time versus if you went, it is what I used to think if you went straight to Evergreen, you would just have a trickle of people coming in at different times, it would be hard to troubleshoot and really see what's working. But then I created a new strategy where actually when you first launch, you launch with an evergreen funnel, but you put a group of people into that funnel at the same time. So instead of just saying like, okay, when people join my list, I'll put them through this, let's say you have an email list of 200 people or 2000 people, you literally just put that group of people through your funnel all at the same time. And it simulates that live launch effect where you can now see oh, okay, so this email didn't work or this, you know, we had a tech glitch on this link or whatever. And you can figure those things out really quickly, that you would, I used to think you couldn't really do that with Evergreen. So now I don't think you need to live lunch. And I know Molly, just because you're here I'm seeing you have had experience with this same thing being in the Incubator, Molly did the same thing with her evergreen funnel, only put like 60 people through it the first time and made two sales and has had you know, more success since then. So it's definitely doable and not like when we turned our evergreen funnel on. And at that very first month, and we made 10 grand it was because we put a group of people through it. And then when we redid our funnels in January 2021, we made 60 grand that month from our funnels. And it was because we put a big group of people through it all at one time. Elizabeth says would love to know, if you have a course on evergreen, do you have a system or scheduled to collect feedback? So, yes, but I'm not 100% sure what you mean by feedback. Elizabeth, can you tell me if you mean like student surveys and like once people buy feedback from your clients? Or do you mean feedback from people who are like going through your funnels? Either way, I guess it's possible to do both because you can have an email and your she's nodding yes.
Yes, yes. Sorry. I didn't know if I should unmute or not. So yeah, it was just that if there if there's constantly people coming in, I didn't know if you just wait to see if people have feedback on you know, what's working or what's not or getting ideas in case you want to tweak the course. I didn't know if you're just always monitoring something or if you're proactively reaching out or if it's both?

It both for sure. I mean, so we have a survey that we do, and we just have quarterly like once a quarter, we're going to send all active students a survey and get their feedback. Some people have been in it for 10 months, and some people are I've been at for 10 days. And we still want to hear everybody's feedback. I think this is also a benefit to having like a community forum or a Facebook group of some kind, because you can see like, what are the questions that are coming up? And what are the concerns? Where are the holes like? Well notice, okay, everybody keeps asking this question about uploading something to Google Search Console, clearly, we need to go back and make that more clear. And so yeah, I think there's opportunity where it's just sort of ongoing feedback. Okay. Jenny says do you recommend starting with a little gasoline to give your hybrid strategy, some momentum? I think it totally depends. This is very much like there is no one size fits all thing here, right? Because I think that you could and if you have more money than time, maybe starting with something like ads would be a better thing for you because content marketing blogging, like that does take some time, you're not going to start a blog and on your first blog post get like 30 new email subscribers, right if you're just starting, but if you've created a lead magnet and you run ads to it, you could get that and you could go through it. So I think sometimes it's a matter of figuring out do you have more time or do you have more money right now and choosing which one feels best to you? Okay, Molly II says what size ticket offer do you put through your evergreen funnels? All sizes, we've had ebooks we've had tiny offers we have 21 days to end packed, which is a $397 course, six FBA, which has been anywhere between 997 and 1597. Over the last couple of years, we've had the Incubator, which is a higher ticket item. So literally, you can do almost anything through evergreen funnels, your strategy inside the funnel might vary. And that's something that we teach more inside the Incubator. But you can do all different kinds of price points for sure. Elizabeth says, How can we find a mentor in our world of female entrepreneurs? Hi, I'm here. I'm here for you. And a lot of the speakers here today might resonate with you as well. So please check them out, figure out who feels most aligned to you and what you're trying to do. But that is one of the reasons that we're doing this conference and having speakers is because, again, there is no one way. And as much as I would love every single one of you to come work with me, I may not be right for you. And maybe somebody else here is and I want you to do what is best for you. Mary Allen says when you say evergreen put them through, do you mean deliver a recorded course to them? When I say put them through your evergreen funnel, this is more of a email sequence that we're putting people through, there may be recorded portions of it, we have had a lot of success with webinars and pre recorded webinars. So you can do that. The content itself could be pre recorded, it could be delivered live, it could be a combination, it could be a hybrid, and that's what the next couple of sessions are going to talk about. So we'll build on that from here. So definitely stay tuned for those. But yes, that is one option. Okay, Jean Ann says I'm starting from scratch, how do you start specifically getting over the What the heck can I offer feeling, Jean and stay tuned for the next session? That is literally the entire point of it. So you're in the right place. Molly II says do you introduce the offers like a staircase through the course funnel? So this is a great question, too. I think for the VIP day, I just say that because we're running out of time today. And this is a little bit more advanced, you can I generally recommend having separate funnels for different products. But there's ways to build in upsells, and down cells and bump offers and trip wires and all kinds of things. So you can have multiple things. But I also have found success when you are asking, ask people to do too many things. They choose nothing. So having one clear action that you really want people to take is generally more successful. But then again, like I said, maybe they didn't take the action you wanted them to take and now the carts closed, maybe you'd have something else for them. All right. So there you have it.
